A special court in Myanmar today sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison after she was ousted in a military coup and placed under house arrest.
Suu Kyi has been indicted on a number of charges, with Myanmar media reporting that the verdict in the first case was handed down today (6).
Suu Kyi was convicted of disturbing the public and violating health laws imposed by the ‘Covid 19’ epidemic.
In addition, Suu Kyi has been charged with violating a state secrecy law and corruption, and faces up to life in prison if convicted.
Suu Kyi has denied all allegations against her.
The army seized power on February 1, ousting 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi.
Myanmar held general elections last year. Suu Kyi and her Democratic Party won an easy victory. Defeated were political groups supporting the Myanmar military.
Those political groups continued to accuse the general election of being rigged. It was only then that the allegations escalated into a military coup.
At the time of Aung San Suu Kyi’s arrest, soldiers found communication equipment, including a walkie – talkie, in her Yangon home. It was also said that there were no licenses for them.
