The real-world forensic science laboratory that was the subject of the BBC’s hit drama Traces is at risk of closing, foreign media reports. The Leverhulme Research Center, owned by the University of Dundee in Scotland, is at risk of closing as a result of a decision to cut its €30 million funding.
The 24 staff members who worked at the laboratory are also at risk of losing their jobs. The Leverhulme Research Center is the country’s largest research institution conducting forensic science research since 2016. It has contributed to bringing perpetrators of serious crimes to justice on numerous occasions.
“It is a shame that the university is considering giving up one of its most valuable assets,” says Val McDermid, an award-winning crime writer and writer of the TV series Traces, whose elaborate forensic laboratory was modeled after the Leverhulme lab.
