Sri Lanka is ranked 15th in 43 countries
The giants leading the gold medals in the Doha Athletics Championship with the highest number of gold medalist battles back and forth to Bahrain. Bahrain won seven gold medals at the 23rd Asian Championship, which was held at Doha Khalifa Stadium. China won six golds. But the medal counts came from China.
China has won 21 medals in six gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze medals, while Bahrain won 7 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals and made 14 overall medals. India won the third place in the Gold medal winning five golds, six silver and six bronze medals. Japan won 5 gold medals, 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, while the third place was won by three golds and a bronze medal in the medal rankings.
Qatar has won six gold medals and a bronze medal in the sixth place in the semi-finals.
Nearly 700 athletes from 43 countries from Asia took part in this event and presented 186 medals to 43 events. Sri Lanka was placed 15th in the overall bronze medal. No athletes from 28 countries were able to win any medal at the Asian Athletic Championship. At this championship, athletes began to fly to Doha as the world athletics championship was held in Doha next September. Therefore, there was more competition in every division.
Sri Lanka’s maiden medalist, 23-year-old Vidusha Lassani, finished the bronze medal at the women’s event in the women’s doubles event with a time of 13.53 meters. Vijushha Lassani who scored the Sri Lankan record at the Lord’s Championships in Colombo recorded the best performance of 13.64 meters.
Sri Lanka women set up a new Sri Lanka record in women’s 400 meters. Dilshi Kumarasinghe, Nadeesha Ramanayake, Upamalika Rathnakumari and Nimali Liyanarachchi joined the competition and the match was 3: 35.06 seconds. In 1999, Damayanthi Dhasha, Nimmi Soysa, E. Chandralatha and Swarnalatha Edirisinghe broke the record of 3: 35.42 minutes. Doing a heavy roller coaching team did not have a chance to get the Doha race, so there was a lot of weaknesses between the four players. It is worth to appreciate the fact that although Sri Lanka lost the 400 meters running medal, the new Sri Lankan record is appreciated. The gold medal was won by Japan with a 3: 32.10 min. Bahrain and Silver medal won 3: 32.21 minutes and India and Bronze medal won 3: 34.88.
Sri Lanka has won 19 gold medals, 14 silver and 20 bronze medals in the history of the Asian Athletic Championship. China won 314 gold medals, 215 silver and 119 bronze medals, while Japan won 153 gold, 193 silver and 217 bronze medals. India has won the third place with 90 gold medals, 107 silver medals and 130 bronze medals. At the Asian Athletic Championship, Sri Lanka has won 19 gold, 14 silver and 20 bronze medals.
