U.S. President Joe Biden has said he faces two options after Russia invaded Ukraine. In an interview on Saturday, Biden emphasized the need to “launch a third world war or strike Russia with economic sanctions”. He added that Moscow would pay a “serious price” for its military operation.
“You have two options: start a third world war, go to war with Russia, physically or two: make sure the price is paid because a country that does so much against international law has done so,” Biden said.
Two days ago, the US imposed sanctions on multiple Russian banks, individuals and technology imports in Russia. On Friday, the White House announced that it would pursue another round of sanctions targeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and members.
Biden has so far insisted that the United States not intervene militarily in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but has increased military aid to Ukraine and sent thousands of U.S. troops to NATO countries in Eastern Europe.
Before the eruption of military action, Putin warned that any other country interfering in Russia’s progress would face “greater consequences than anything you have ever faced in history.”
However he acknowledged that their numbers were not enough to defeat Biden’s government. Following calls from some Ukrainian politicians, Republican envoy Adam Kingsinger, a silent ally of the Democratic president, has called for the enforcement of a “no-fly zone” throughout Ukraine. Critics have warned that such a move could be tantamount to a declaration of war against Russia.
