The European Space Agency says it has begun research into the possibility of preparing food in space, including meats, mashed potatoes and desserts, for astronauts going into space in the future. The foods prepared in a space laboratory will be prepared in low gravity and high radiation levels, and the space center has announced that this project has been launched as the first step in establishing a small pilot food production facility on the International Space Station within the next two years.
Since an astronaut can spend up to 20,000 British pounds sterling on food per day, researchers say that they are looking into the possibility of preparing food in this space laboratory with the aim of minimizing that cost.
