World countries have agreed to strengthen and conserve 18 endangered fish and shark species.
This was decided at yesterday’s conference on the International Trade in Endangered Species.
Fish species that are declared protected include marco sharks, wedgefish and guitarfish. The market demand for Mora fin soup is a major factor in the rapid decline in the number of marine legumes. Based on these factors, the proposal is tabled by Mexico. It is estimated that the number of sharks that die each year in the commercial fisheries industry is estimated to be approximately 100 million, and the number is estimated at between 63 and 273 million. Marcos, considered to be the world’s fastest shark, has disappeared from the Mediterranean Sea and is rapidly dwindling in the Atlantic North Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Although 102 countries have voted in favor of Mexico’s proposal, 40 countries have opposed it, including China, Iceland, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand. Some have argued that there is insufficient evidence that the Marco shark has disappeared as a result of the fish hunt.
