The shortest route to Mannar is the Colombo-Puttalam, Eluwankulam and Wilpattu forests. Today, the other side of the road is the road through Wilpattu, though the other side of the road has access to Mannar.
This road trip is fantastic. But it is difficult.
We recently traveled along this route to Mannar. The route from Colombo to Elutankulama via Puttalam is excellent. There is a carpeted path. This is the end of the carpet where you go and enter the Wilpattu Maha forest. It’s a naval outpost. Inspections, etc., happen there. There is also a wildlife office.
The naval checkpoint is a strange environment. We have to cross that narrow river through the beautiful Kala Oya. It was a wonderful experience. Our entire journey then was to a narrow passage through Wilpattu Maha. The journey is difficult, the piles of mud and dirt are numerous.
The passenger transport service still runs through this route, no matter how difficult it may be. Passenger transport services such as Mannar, Kalpitiya, Mannar and Puttalam are also operated on this route. Throughout our journey we saw four CTB and private bus services. Occasionally a motorcycle runs a cab.
My journey with the elephant population is a source of great inspiration.
From Eluwankulama we once again find a carpet in the Marichchikattu area. The distance is about 38 kilometers. In this distance we find only a few naval checkpoints.
These are the outposts built for the protection of the forest. It was on this road that we lost the way to the historic Kudiramale. Even though the distance is shorter, I have to spend a lot of time traveling because of my cramps.
We will not have to pay for this mine, even if it is a plot of land controlled by the Department of Wildlife. (If the Ambewela Ohiya road is closed we will have to pay.)
After Marichchikattu, the road is superb again. We will be able to reach Mannar after a short time.
The Wilpattu Road is a great way for those of you who are looking for a change to experience the same. Watch the video to see the extent of the journey.
